What does DYOR mean?

In one sentence

DYOR means "do your own research" — good advice in principle, though often used to disclaim responsibility for a bad recommendation.

DYOR appears constantly in crypto, usually appended to something that looks a lot like a recommendation. Used honestly it is a reminder that nobody else has your circumstances and you should verify claims yourself. Used dishonestly it is a liability shield tacked onto a promotion.

Actual research on a crypto project means checking: is there a working product or only a roadmap; who the team are and whether they have verifiable histories; how the token supply is distributed and when it unlocks; whether the token accrues value if the project succeeds; whether contracts have been independently audited; and whether on-chain activity matches the claims being made.

It does not mean reading the project’s own marketing, or watching videos from people paid to promote it. Start with primary sources — documentation, contracts, on-chain data — and treat anything with a referral link as advertising until proven otherwise.

For example

If your research consists of the project's own website and a promotional video, that is not research.
